You Own You: Why Your Inner Voice Matters Most

A couple of years ago, I found myself home alone. The kids were in school, I was cleaning my house, and all of a sudden, I had an epiphany. It felt like a lightning bolt burst through the clouds and struck deep in my soul. Up until that point, I truly believed that all of my successes were due to my unwavering “stubbornness,” my lack to conform, and my vision of what I knew I wanted in this life. And though all of that is true, there is one thing that I learned to listen to and tap into from a young age that I believe kept me on a track toward all of my goals, even in those times when I was at my darkest and lowest.
It wasn’t until later in life that I learned the meaning of frequency and the energy we receive matches what we put out into the world. For a good portion of my life, I understood personal power as my gut instinct. Some call it their inner voice or intuition. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what you call it, nor does it matter what religion you practice, or whether you practice a religion or not. All you need to understand is that we all have the ability to listen and feel the vibrations or frequency that the Universe, or God, or the heavens sends to us. It’s that feeling of “that feels right, or wrong.” “Keep Going!” “Take this turn.” I learned from a young age that the frequency of positivity was what I wanted. Even though I had to work really hard to make it my standard of living, I realized years ago that I have the power to attract and create the life I know I deserve. We all have this power. But in order to tap into it, you need to shift your thinking and how you view yourself and the world around you.
The language of frequency isn’t limited to the divine. As living beings, we emit our own frequency too. I’m sure you’ve heard the term “the power of prayer is real.” It absolutely is. Sitting in prayer is no different from sitting in the power of meditation, or starting your day with positive affirmations rather than waking up and automatically assuming the worst is going to happen. Or visualizing yourself surrounded in divine light. All of these different practices of thought have the same goals and purpose; they project a positive frequency that is light and peaceful. And this, in turn, attracts positivity, and peace to you. It’s very easy to get caught up in other people's negativity. Have you ever gone through endless scrolling sessions on social media where everything you come across is negative? Have you found that this affects the types of thoughts that go through your mind? You may start nit-picking at situations throughout the day and become more frustrated, irritable, or pull into yourself and not want to socialize. Or you may find your subject matter of choice in conversations is negative rather than positive. The more this happens, the more your frequency changes to match that of what you are surrounding yourself with. Eventually, your normal is to find and focus on all of the negatives around you, and it becomes harder to see the positives that surround you.
Now let’s flip the scenario. Have you ever been through the drive through and someone in front of you paid for your order? How did it make you feel? Did you go through the rest of your day with a sense of gratitude for that person? Did you see more of the good around you after that happened instead of so much negativity? Think about the different feelings within you that this creates as opposed to the negative examples above. Do you feel the difference? Both feelings are frequency, but the latter is the standard we want to create for ourselves. Now don’t get me wrong. All feelings are valid, and all emotions are what makes us human. The human experience is not linear. Feeling sad and down is going to happen from time to time. The trick is learning how to recognize it quickly so that you can 1.) assess why and what is affecting you, and 2.) so you can reframe and switch your thoughts sooner.
So how can you begin to reframe your thoughts?
There are a lot of techniques out there:
visualizations
manifesting
scripting
even having AI write your perfect life story for you
and of course, positive affirmations (always a great place to start)
But here’s the truth—until you pinpoint and understand the underlying cause(s) of what is keeping you in a place of negativity, it’s almost impossible to move forward.
You may find that:
one day you wake up, start with affirmations, and feel good
but the next day, you just can’t pull yourself out of the funk, and you slip back into negative self-talk
The only way to work toward successful reframing is to:
understand who you are
understand why you are who you are
and most importantly, accept yourself wholeheartedly
Once you accept yourself fully and without conditions, you’ll begin to understand why you are who you are and can work toward making lasting changes. You’ll feel the shift in your energy and frequency, and notice a difference from the inside that radiates out.
I challenge you to take steps in accepting yourself. Don’t use it as an excuse not to make changes. Instead:
accept all of your flaws
accept all of the circumstances that have led you to this moment—even if they’ve created habits you don’t like
honor the parts of you that you wish to change, because they’ve made you who you are and brought you to the realization that you want and deserve more
